Introduction to Proprietary Software

Proprietary software is a kind of software that only belongs to the company or organization which has developed it. These kinds of software have a closed source-code, which means these can not be modified freely. No one but the owner or right-holder can distribute and access the underlying source code of the software. The development and maintenance of Proprietary software is controlled by the owner or the right-holder. They are the ones to possess complete authority over its features, updates and distributions.

What is proprietary license

A proprietary license model ensures that the modification and distribution rights of software are protected to be accessed by the only owner company. This license also ensures that the end users are not given the authority of modifying or distributing the software.

Difference between Proprietary license and Open-source license

The primary difference that lies between proprietary license and open-source license is the rights given to the end users. In the course of open-source software, the end-users are given full access to the source code, which they can modify for their own use. However, when it comes to proprietary license, the users are not given such authority. Only the owner company can modify and distribute the software.

Different types of proprietary software

There are three types of proprietary software. Each of the type is explained in the following section:

Freeware

Freeware is a kind of proprietary software that is available to the users for completely free. However, even though it’s free to use, the source-code remains inaccessible to the users. The software is still managed, distributed and owned by the owner company or organization.

Shareware

Shareware is a kind of proprietary software that is offered to the users to use for free for a limited period of time. Just like freeware, the source code of these software is inaccessible to the users. Nevertheless, the users are given the opportunity of evaluating the features of the software before making any purchase.

Abandonware

Abandonware is a kind of proprietary software that is no longer supported or maintained by the owner company. However, even though the software is not commercially available or falls under the support of the owner company, these still have the copyright under the name of the owner company.

What kind of proprietary software is Tactic?

By the definitions of different kinds of software presented in the previous section, it can be stated that Tactic ERP & CRM is shareware. The users are given the opportunity of using the ERP & CRM software completely free for three to nine months. The company doesn’t ask for card information to offer the free trial opportunity. However, Tactic has a closed source, which means the users cannot perform any kind of modification or customization to the software by themselves. Nevertheless, ALSOFT, the owner company, offers full support to the users and customizes the software catering to their needs in exceptional situations.
